Text 2

W: Your guitar skills are very cool. How did you learn to play like that?

M: I taught myself by listening to some records of top players.

Text 3

M: I’m Jim Smith. I’ve booked a single room on the 20th of May.

W: Yeah, sir. We have your booking on that date. So anything we can do for you?

M: I want to change my booking to May 25th for 3 days.

Text 4

M: Excuse me. There is something wrong here. I never buy this item.

W: Oh, let me see. I’m sorry I made a mistake. I should have double checked. I’ll take off the 100 for the item. Sorry to have caused you trouble.

Text 5

M: Hi, Shirley, are you going to the football game today?

W: No. I’m planning to watch it on television.

M: Why is that? Do you feel poorly?

Text 6

W: Tommy, you are driving me crazy! Stop using my things!

M: Your things? What do you mean?

W: Like this personal computer. It’s mine. It’s my computer. You know?

M: Sorry, mine is at home, so I had to use yours. I am checking my mailbox.

W: And don’t wear my sunglasses. Wear you own! They are over there on the shelf.

M: Sorry again. Your sunglasses are so smart. What are you going to do?

W: Have a picnic in the East Park this afternoon. It’s so hot outside and I have to wear my sunglasses.

M: OK. Here you are.

M: Could you tell me how big it is?

W: Sorry, I don’t really know.

M: I suppose it can hold three buses.

W: Three buses? No, far more than that.

M: Not only buses!

W: Oh, got it!

M: Your English is amazing!

W: I work for foreign tourists. I’d probably lose my job if my English was poor.

Text 8

M: Mary, we are fools to walk around at noon. It’s so hot today. My skin is too weak under the summer sun.

W: Yeah. It’s really too hot. I think I’m going to fall down.

M: The heat is driving me crazy and I hate my new hat.

W: Why? It’s brand-new, and perfect on you.

M: But I bought it to get rid of the heat. Now it does nothing but burn my head.

W: Beauty costs, John.

M: Laugh all you want, whatever. We need to get out of the heat, and go into the big shop.

W: Walking under the sun is certainly not the way. Do they sell ice-cream in there?

M: No, I prefer being blown by the fans inside.

W: Right. Sorry. Anyway, the radio says that it’ll rain later today.

M: Hope so! Good thing is that autumn is just around the corner.

Text 9

M: May I help you?

W: Yes, I’d like to sign up for the summer program on driving, please.

M: Of course, Miss.

W: How long is the program?

M: The program is for forty days.

W: What if I need more time to learn?

M: In that case. But most people accomplish all the tasks within 3 months. In fact, it takes some people only one month.

W: Do you offer both theory courses and practice courses?

M: Of course we do. For theory courses, you learn the laws and regulations, including how to deal with accidents on the road.

W: I see. Thanks. Can you tell me something about the instructors?

M: Our instructors are all professional drivers. They’re very experienced and responsible.

W: That’s wonderful. I’ll sign up for summer classes.

Text 10

In some western countries, public school education is more common than private education, and about 90 percent of children attend public schools. Basically, there are three stages in a public school, namely, primary or elementary school from kindergarten to 5th grade, middle school or junior high school from 6th to 8th grade and high school or secondary school from 9th to 12th grade.

Compared with private schools, public schools have certain educational problems, one of which is the larger student population. According to a study, public schools have an average of 16 students per teacher, but private schools have an average of 13 students per teacher. So public school students receive less individual attention than private school students. That’s why many students like studying in private school.

In public schools, they cannot refuse any student who has applied for admission. Sometimes, this may result in a slow learning pace for the talented students.

Despite some educational problems, there are certain advantages of public school education. In public schools, different kinds of people from different social backgrounds teach students how to get along with people. Also a study has shown students of public schools get better grades in college than those in private schools.

One Possible Version:

Dear Editor,

I am a Senior Three student. Recently we have carried out a survey – “Towhom do you go when in trouble?” The main findings are as follows.

61% of the students surveyed consider friends or schoolmates as their ideal listeners when they have trouble and want to confide, the reason of which is that they are in the same age group and have a better understanding of each other. Another 22% choose teachers and parents to talk to. They suggest that teachers and parents are rich in life and educational experiences. Nevertheless,

there are also 17% who don’t share their troubles at all. They say that their troubles are none of others’ business; some may find it difficult to converse with others.

(It is not easy to reach definite conclusions based on such a small example. However, some general comments can be made.) It seems clear from the response that some students lack communication with others and teachers and parents need to play a more important role in their lives.

                                                                     Yours sincerely,

                                                                              Zhang Ming
