Rome had the Forum(广场). London has Speaker’s Corner. Now always-on-the-go New Yorkers have Liz and Bill.

Liz and Bill, two college graduates in their early 20s, have spent a whole year trying to have thousands of people talk to them in subway stations and on busy street corners. Just talk.

Using a 2-foot-tall sign that says, “Talk to Me”, they attract many passers-by. They don’t collect money. They don’t push religion. So what’s the point?

“To see what happens,” said Liz. “We simply enjoy life with open communication.”

Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, they decided to walk from New York City to Washington, a 270-mile trip. They found they loved talking to people along the way and wanted to continue talking with strangers after their return.

“It started as a crazy idea,” Liz said. “We were so curious about all the strangers walking by with their life stories. People will talk to us about their jobs, their clothes, their childhood experiences, anything.”

Denise wanted to talk about an exam she was about to take. She had stopped by for the second time in two days, to let the two listeners know how it went. Marcia had lost her husband because of a serious disease. “That was very heavy on my mind, but talking about it to total strangers made me feel good” Marcia explained.

To celebrate a year of talking, the two held a get-together in a city park for all the people they had met over the past year. A few hundred people showed up, as well as some television cameramen and reporters. They may plan more parties or try to attract more people to join their informal talks. Some publishers have expressed interest in a book, something they say they’ll consider.

56.What did Liz and Bill start doing after September 2001?

       A.Chatting with passers-by.                   B.Setting up street signs.

       C.Telling stories to strangers.                  D.Organizing a speaker’s corner

57.What they have been doing can be described as _____________.

       A.pointless           B.abnormal            C.crazy         D.successful

58.Why are Denise and Marcia mentioned in the text?

A.They knew Liz and Bill very well.

B.They happened to meet the writer of the text.

C.They organized the get-together in the city park.

D.They are examples of those who talked to Liz and Bill.

59.What will Liz and Bill do in the future?

A.Go in for publishing.                       B.Do more television programs.

C.Continue what they are doing.          D.Spend more time reading books.

60.How do they like the idea of writing a book?

A.They have decided to wait a year or two.

B.They will think about it carefully.

       C.They agreed immediately.

D.They find it hard to do that.

B

Microwaves may be great at warming up food, but what about warming people?

Using microwaves to directly heat owners of a room would save much of the energy wasted by heating walls and furniture. And despite popular ideas about microwaves, this technique would be safe, according to Charles T. Burlier of the Microwave Research Centre in Marlborough, New Hampshire. Low-power microwaves only penetrate(贯穿)the skin(low-power microwave penetration in a ham is about 0.2 inches, for example)and with no negative effects.

To test this idea, Buffer subjected himself to microwaves in a special room using a standard 500-watt, 2459 MHz magnetron(磁控管). He found that a person would start to feel warmth at about 20 milliwatts per square centimeter(mw./sq. cm. ); a satisfactory feeling of warmth occurs between 35 and 50 mw./sq. cm. By comparison, a person standing in noonday summer sun feels the amount of 85 mw. sq. cm. And a frozen meat pie in your microwave oven receives about 1000mw./sq.cm.

In houses of the future, each room could be provided with its own magnetron, says Buffler. When you stepped into the living room, for example, a motion detector would turn on the magnetron, filling the room with low-power microwaves. In the same way that a microwave oven heats up a hamburger, but not the plate it’s on, you would feel warmth from the microwaves without changing the temperature of your coffee table.

While it might be some time before homeowners are comfortable enough with the idea to set up whole-body microwave heaters in houses, Buffler says microwaves may attract livestock(家畜)farmers. Lambs that are born outdoors in winter, for example, are frequently lost to cold. Microwaves could warm the lambs safely and quickly.

61.Which of the following can tell the main idea of the passage?

A.A new heating system.                         B.A new microwave oven.

       C.A popular technique.                            D.The magnetron.

62.According to the paragraph 2, which of the following does not describe the characteristics of a microwaves heater?

A.It directly heats people in a room.        B.It heats walls and furniture in a room.        C.It is safe.                            D.It saves energy.

63.The test conducted by Buffler shows that when a person feels comfortable warmth, he receives about          .

       A.20 mw./sq. cm    B.40 mw./sq. cm.    C.60 mw./sq. cm.   D.85 mw./sq. cm.

64.Which of the following statements about microwave heaters would Buffler most probably agree with?

A.Microwave heaters will soon be widely used by homeowners.

B.Microwave heaters sometimes make people feel uncomfortable.

C.Perhaps livestock farmers, who wish to protect their lambs in winter, will first use microwave heaters.

D.The public will not accept microwave heaters because they are somewhat unsafe.

WHY NOT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

BETWEEN

THIS….. AND THIS

This summer, join the International Conservation (环境保护)Scouts on a fun-filled holiday with a difference. Year after year, young people from all around the world get together at one of our sixteen conservation camps. Their shared aim is to help protect the countryside and its wildlife.

Many animals and plants are in danger of disappearing forever. The dormouse, a kind of mouse, for example, needs woodland plants for food and trees to stay in. Its habitat is being destroyed by man and it needs our help to survive.

On a conservation camp holiday, you’ll learn all about nature and how to protect it. Our trained leaders will accompany you and tell you everything you need to know. Because of this you don’t need any experience, just energy and enthusiasm. You will explore the countryside and work to ensure the survival of hundreds of animals and plants and still have plenty of time to enjoy the camp’s excellent sport games and organized nature paths through beautiful scenery.

The International Conservation Scouts is a world-wide organization, so there must be a camp near you. You can spend a splendid holiday at any of the camps for as little as £60, including accommodation and food.

D

Once I mentioned the story of a friend getting something made for me to give my daughter as a present, and then not letting me pay her back. Writing about that made me think about the problem of communicating feelings, particularly in cross – cultural situations. Let me explain.

If I say to a fellow English – speaker, “I know how you feel,” what I am actually saying is that I can imagine myself in the same position, and therefore can imagine how I would feel. But my friend could perfectly correctly reply, “No, you don’t! You can’t.” In truth we can communicate how strongly we feel, but we cannot communicate exactly what we feel.

But if we come from the same linguistic and cultural background, the match can be close enough.

Culture and language cannot be separated, and I think that we have the feelings that are recognized in our culture and therefore represented in our language. One might say that we feel the things that our language allows us to express. So when it comes to trying to explain feelings to someone of a different mother tongue, the difficulties are huge.

I could not explain to my friend how I felt about her not letting me repay her, because Chinese culture, it seems, does not recognize the same feelings on such occasions.

She could understand the words that I was using, but could not understand what I was trying to say.

Some time ago, I was going up in the lift, and a colleague with whom I merely have a nodding acquaintance was offering round some sweetmeat. I knew that I really could not eat it, so I refused politely, only to be told that I was making her lose face.

I have no idea how serious the colleague was being. Causing someone to lose face is a serious social mistake. We have to do all we can to learn the types of situation in which it happens, and to try to avoid them. But we can only know about losing face, we can’t feel losing face, as the term is merely a literal translation of Chinese, not one that is native to English.

69.What does the author intend to express in the second paragraph?

A.The author’s friend does not understand English.

B.The author and her friend can communicate feelings with each other.

C.The author’s friend can’t understand the real meaning of the author.

D.The author’s friend feels insulted if other people know how she feels.

70.What does the author mean by saying “… the match can be close enough.”

A.There can be some competition between them.

B.They can make a perfect couple.

C.They can share similar opinions and thoughts.

D.They are even in a match.

71.According to the author, it is        to explain feelings to someone of a different language.

A.very difficult   B.a little bit difficult

C.not difficult at all  D.impossible

72.This passage is focused on           .

A.how to avoid making people lose face

B.cultural differences between the east and the west

C.the importance of one’s cultural background

D.how to be acquainted with Chinese culture
