第三部分。 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2 分,满分40分)

A

Daniel Brown was just five years old when he climbed into the family car and let it roll away down the road. He was only three when he flooded the kitchen.

His mother, Angela Brown, is in despair. She is very busy looking after her new baby, a little girl called Laura, as well as Daniel. She told us,“Daniel is so full of curiosity.”At that moment, we hear a huge crash and then silence. We go upstairs and find Daniel crawling out of a wardrobe(衣橱)he has pulled over onto the floors, with a book in his hand.“It’s for you, Mum,”he says and looks up at his mum and smiles. Seven-year-old Daniel has a lovely face. He has golden hair, big brown eyes, and a friendly smile. I have to admit that Daniel doesn’t look like a naughty boy.

Angela told me all about it,“Once I found him as he was about to put Jasper in the washing machine.”Jasper, she explained, is the Browns’ dog. “When I asked him why, he said that he thought Jasper was dirty! It’s amazing how one little boy can cause so much trouble. Another time he cut off all the hair of the little girl next door. She was going to attend her sister’s wedding and the neighbors haven’t spoken to us since.

Angela told me about Daniel’s most expensive crime “I was about to do the washing up when the baby started crying. Daniel decided to help and filled the kitchen sink with water. When I came in the water was already flooding the kitchen and was about to flood the hall. The carpet was ruined and had to be replaced. I hope things will get better as he gets older.”

Amazingly, Daniel is quite well behaved in school. This may be because he is rarely bored. Meanwhile he continues to be the naughtiest little boy in England. Will his baby sister Laura grow up to be the naughtiest little girl?

 56. What did Daniel do while his mother was talking to the author?

    A. He drove away the family car.  B. He cut off the hair of the girl next door.

    C. He flooded the kitchen.      D. He fell to the floor with the wardrobe.

57. Why was Daniel going to put the dog in the washing machine?

A. He meant to clean the dog.

B. He wanted to punished the dog

  C. He intended to make trouble.

D. He wished to draw his mother‘s attention.

58. It can be inferred from the passage that ___.

  A. the mother spoiled the boy.

B. the boy found school life interesting

  C. the mother lost hope in the boy.

D. the boy had no freedom at home.

B

I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals on successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had died“full of years”, as the Bible would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon.

At the first home, the son of the deceased woman said to me,“If only I sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today It’s my fault that she died.”At the second home, the son

of the other deceased woman said,“If only I hadn’t insisted on my mother’s going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride, the sudden change of climate, was more than she could take. It’s my fault that she’s dead.”

You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course ___keeping Mother at home, putting off the operation____ would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?

There seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our pressing need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens. That leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds.

The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believing that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.

A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to his tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.

59. What is said about the two deceased elderly women?

A. They lived out a natural life.

  B. They died of exhaustion after the long plane ride.

  C. They weren’t used to the change in weather.

  D. They died due to lack of care by family members.

60. The author had to conduct the two women’s funerals probably because____.

  A. he wanted to comfort the two families

B. he was an official from the community

  C. he had great pity for the deceased

D. he was minister of the local church

61. People feel guilty for the death of their loved ones because ____.

  A. they couldn’t a better way to express their sorrow.

  B. they believed that they were responsible

  C. they had neglected the natural course of events

  D. they didn’t know things often turn in the opposite direction

62. According to the passage, the underlined part in paragraph 4

probably means that _____

A. everything in the world is predetermined

B. the world can be interpreted in different ways

C. there’s an explanation for everything in the world

D. we have to be sensible in order to understand the world

63. What’s the idea of the message?

A. Life and death is an unsolved mystery

B. Every story should have a happy ending

C. Never feel guilty all the time because not every disaster is our fault

D. In general, the survivors will feel guilty about the people who passed away

The huge thirst for jobs in the civil service has made the national servant exam one of China’s most competitive tests. The first exam was held in 1995 and since then more and more people have signed up for it, with applications reaching a peak over the last two years.

The latest on-line survey, carried out by China Youth Daily ,found that more then 73 percent of young people want to work as civil servants. Of the 17.330 respondents, about 83 percent said they were attracted by the job’s stability, guaranteed health care and pension. Meanwhile,55 percent said it could bring“practical profits”.Nearly 1 million people applied to take the exam last year, yet only just over 10,000 were finally employed.

This year the competition continued. The exact number of applicants is not known, with the final day for applications today. But the flood of applicants has already broken the exam’s website once. China Youth Daily reported that the site was forced to close for maintenance due to unusually high traffic on the night of October 16.

In a typical year several hundred applicants will apply for many of the jobs listed. For example, the five job vacancies provided by the secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party have this year attracted more then 3,880 applicants. In general, the exam means 50 people competing for one post, the report said. Positions as civil servants are attractive, not only because of the stable income and good health care, but also because of the low risks compared with the power and resources the positions enjoy. Among the total 6 million public servants, around 20,000 were dismissed between 1996 and 2003.

    b. Civil servant exam was carried out by China Youth Daily .

    c. About one percent of applicants were finally employed last year.

    d. Once passing the exam, one will work as a public servant forever.

What are the chances that we will come across some aliens, as we explore the galaxy(银河系)? If the argument about the time for the appearance of life on Earth is correct, there ought to be many other stars, on whose planets there must be life. Some of these stellar(恒星的) systems could have formed 5 billion years before the Earth. So why are there some life forms in the galaxy? Why hasn’t the Earth been visited, and even colonized? I don’t believe that there are aliens in UFOs. I think any visit by aliens, would be much more obvious, and probably also, much more unpleasant.

What is the explanation of why we have not been visited?

One possibility is that the argument, about the appearance of life on Earth, is wrong. Maybe the probability of life spontaneously appearing is so low, that Earth is the only planet in the galaxy, or in the observable universe, in which it happened.

Another possibility is that there was a reasonable probability of forming self-reproducing systems, like cells, but that most of these forms of life did not develop intelligence.

A third possibility is that there is a reasonable probability for life to form, and to  develop into intelligent begins, in the external transmission phase(外部转换阶段). But at that point, the system becomes unstable, and the intelligent life destroys itself. This would be a very pessimistic conclusion. I very much hope it isn’t true.

I prefer a fourth possibility: there are other forms of intelligent life out there, but that we have been overlooked. There used to be a project called SETI, the search for extraterrestrial(宇宙的) intelligence. It involved scanning the radio frequencies, to see if we could pick up signals from alien civilizations. I thought this project was worth supporting, though it was cancelled due to a lack of funds. But we should have been careful of answering back, until we have developed a bit further. Meeting a more advanced civilization, at our present stage, might be a bit like the original inhabitants of America meeting Columbus. I don’t think they had good luck.

72. The underlined word“spontaneously”here means____.

    A. without outside force           B. with outside force

C. by high speed                 D. by low speed

73. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?

    A. It is impossible that we come across some aliens.

    B. Life only exists on earth.

    C. It is likely that we’ll come across some aliens.

    D. Aliens will never visit the earth.

74. Which of the following is NOT among the four possibilities of why we haven’t been visited?

    A. Forms of life on the other planets don’t develop into intelligent beings.

    B. Earth is the only planet that contains life in the observable universe.

    C. Life on the other planets destroys itself.

    D. Aliens are too far away from us.

75. In the author’s eyes, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence ___.

A. is unnecessary        B. should be supported

C. is a waste of money    D. has not been done appropriately
