However, you’d better keep it in mind that whether you go on a calorie-restricted (限制热量的) diet or not, exercising and   28   eating are excellent ways to keep your body in good   29  .

Were you the first or the last child in your family? Or were you a middle or an only child? Some people think   31   matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about    what birth order means. Some people say that oldest children,   32   are smart and strong-willed, are very likely   33  (succeed). The reason   34   this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child and give him or her a lot of attention. An only child will succeed for   35   same reason. What happens to the   36   children in the family? Middle children don’t get so much attention, so they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child,  37  , often gets special treatment. Often this child grows up to be funny. But a recent study saw things quite   38  (difference). The study found that first children believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in   39   lives. They usually   40  (follow) orders. Rules didn’t mean as much to later children in the family. They took chances and they often did better in life.

三、阅读(共两节,满分40分)

第一节  阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

A teenage girl is fighting for her life today after being struck by lightning as severe thunderstorms swept across Britain. The girl was one of four teenage girls from London who were hit by lightning in the Parade Ground area of Hyde Park during a storm. Earlier, Joseph Wharton, 14, died as he was struck by lightning while camping in his friend’s backyard in the West Midlands.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said the girl remained in serious condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. She had stopped breathing by the time the first paramedic (护理人员) arrived on the scene just two minutes after the strike at 5:40 p.m. yesterday.

The other three girls hit by the bolt all had injuries, and were taken to University College Hospital. Their conditions were not serious, the spokesman added.

The strike lifted the girls into the air and then dropped them to the ground, a witness reported.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said paramedics risked their lives to treat the girls. “The storm was still overhead and lightning was still coming down while they were treating the patients,” he said. “All staff involved acted very professionally in providing fast treatment to these patients in very difficult circumstances.” Scotland Yard said the incident was being looked into by officers from the Royal Parks’ Operational Command Unit.

Joseph Wharton of Byland Way, Bloxwich, was hit during the extended thunderstorm which struck the region yesterday morning. He was pronounced dead at Walsall Manor Hospital.

He had been sleeping in a tent while staying with school friend Michael Lees at a house on nearby Cresswell Crescent.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said paramedics were called at 7:50 a.m. and unsuccessful attempts were made to revive(使苏醒)the sports-mad teenager. A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said four or five people die each year as a result of lightning strikes in the UK.

41. All four girls________.

A. were killed by the lightning                           B. were seriously injured

C. were being treated at the same hospital          D. were lifted up and dropped to the ground

42. The underlined word “bolt” probably means “________”.

A. thunder        B. rain                  C. storm                      D. lightning

43. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The boy was killed after the four girls had been hit.

B. The paramedics began to treat the girls after taking them to the hospital.

C. First-aid was given to the girls during the storm.

D. The boy was hit by lightning in the Parade Ground area of Hyde Park.

44. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A. many British people die from lightning strikes every year

B. the writer blames the government for the accident

C. the paramedics could also have been hit by lightning while aiding the girls

D. Joseph had been playing in the open air before the strike

45. This passage is probably taken from a ________.

 A. magazine     B. newspaper   C. science fiction    D. weather report

B

In a book called Magnificent Obsession, by Lloyd C. Douglas, a description is given of people helping others but doing it secretly. When difficult problems worried an individual, friends nearby would meet to discuss possible solutions without the individual knowing their actions. When a solution was agreed upon, one or two of the friends would carry out the plan and solve the problem secretly, to the great delight of the worried individual. The helpers would stand by privately, content with their success. No reward was given to the problem solvers, not even a sincere “thank you”, because they were never known.

This concept is popular today but in a different way. The phrase “pay it forward” is now used when one person helps another. However, the person helped may not be able to repay the person or group that helped them. So rather than return the favor to their helpers, they are supposed to help someone else in the future, which means they pay it forward. It is a sense of responsibility which makes us want to give back in equal measure to the one who has helped us. But, in this case, the responsibility turns to helping someone in the future.

Suppose your elderly grandmother pays part of your schooling. She may tell you there is no need to repay her because it is a gift from someone who loves you very much. Nothing would please her more than to have you use her money to get a good education.

You may never be able to repay her for such a gift. However, she not only gave you some money, but she provided you with an example that you should also help other people who need it.

People with serious needs are everywhere. Many are children who need better clothes, more books and even better schools. Some are elderly people who can’t afford their medicine or a doctor’s care. Consider how you can “pay it forward” rather than pay money back to your grandmother.

46.The helpers in the book “Magnificent Obsession” were not rewarded because ________.

A.    they hadn’t solved the problems thoroughly

B.    they had solved the problems secretly

C.    they were friends of the worried individual

D.    they expected to be paid back in the future

47. The underlined word “pay it forward” means ________.

A.    to repay someone who has helped you

B.    to pay someone else who needs help

C.    to help someone who has helped you

D.    to help someone else who needs help

48.What does the writer suggest with the example of “your elderly grandmother”?

A.    We should learn to respect our grandparents.

B.    We should work hard to get a good education.

C.    We should also lend a hand to other people in need of help.

D.    We should never forget to repay people for their help.

49.From the passage we know ________.

A.    everybody needs help

B.    more children need help than elderly people

C.    it costs a lot of money to “pay it forward”

D.    nowadays many people help others without being repaid

50.By writing the passage, the author wishes people in the world to be ________.

A. unselfish                  B. mysterious                C. honest               D. unforgettable

C

In the story of the three little pigs, the one who built his house of straw did not do well; the big bad wolf blew it down. But builder Michael Furbish, who made his own home from bales (捆) of straw, and an elementary school from the same material, says that in reality straw houses are not only strong, but also good for the environment. Straw—the stalks (杆,茎) of plants like wheat, oats, and barley—is considered a waste material and is commonly used on farms as animal bedding. But more and more people are discovering that straw baled into rectangular blocks is an excellent and inexpensive building material.

There are two ways to make a straw-bale structure. You can build load-bearing walls with them, which means the walls support the roof. Or you can build a post-and-beam wooden frame that supports the roof and fill in the walls with the bales. Either way, the walls are there to stay. And they provide great insulation(绝缘), helping keep straw houses in cold climates warm in winter and those built in hot places like the desert cool in summer. Straw is considered a "green" building material because it is a renewable resource: a whole new crop can be grown and harvested every year, easily "renewing" the supply. Also, planting and harvesting straw uses relatively little energy. "Most other building materials require a lot of energy to be produced," explains Furbish.  "With straw-bale construction, you are getting a building product without using much energy at all."

Furbish used about 900 straw bales in his family's two-story, three-bedroom house. His company also provided straw-bale walls for the Friends Community School of College Park in Maryland. That project used about 4,000 bales. When asked if there are any problems with living in a straw house, like mice nibbling (咬,啃) on the walls, Furbish points out that the straw is completely covered with plaster and stucco (灰泥). Besides, he has a couple of cats on mouse watch, just in case. "It would be hard to find a wall system that will wear better than straw," he says. The big bad wolf is just out of luck.

51. The author wrote the passage in order to ________.

A. prove that the tale of the three pigs and the wolf is wrong

B. teach readers how to build straw houses

C. introduce an environmentally-friendly building material

D. advertise Furbish’s special houses

52. What do we learn about straw houses from the passage?

A. It costs little to make such special houses.

B. The outsides of the houses are green.

C. They are mostly built in the desert.

D. Plaster and stucco help make the houses strong.

53. The writer mentions the wolf at the beginning and the end of this passage to suggest ________.

A. straw houses are in fact nice and strong

B. the big bad wolf can never blow the straw houses down

C. the big bad wolf is very unlucky

D. people in straw houses needn’t worry about wolves

54. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

       A. Straw is a waste of material as animal bedding.

       B. Furbish built his home and an elementary school with only bales of straw.

       C. Building straw houses requires no energy at all.

       D. The roof of a straw house can be supported by a wooden frame.

55. We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. living in a straw house, one has to keep several cats

B. the walls of a straw house help keep heat inside in cold climates

C. it is best to build a straw house at harvest time

D. we need 900 straw bales to build one straw house

The generation gap between students and their teachers is becoming more significant with only 3.3 per cent out of a survey group of 1,000 students from 30 key middle schools in the city saying they would be willing to tell their teachers of their inner thoughts.

In today's educational environment, teachers are positioned to be the authority figure for learning instead of also becoming a good friend in the lives of students.

As only students with good marks in exams are considered the "apples in the eyes" of the teachers, most students think their teachers to be partial (偏心).

"I feel sad to hear such remarks," said Yu Yi, a well-known special-class teacher.

She recalled that in the past, teachers and students would play basketball together or comment on novels while sitting on the grass during a break. But today, study and good marks are the only topics of conversation between students and teachers.

"Schools are not only the place where knowledge is imparted (传授) but also where students are taught how to be an upright person," Yu said. "The success of a person is not merely determined by intelligence but also by emotional state."

Yang Xiong, director of the Juvenile Research Institute, said the educational system which focuses on examinations should be held to be substantially responsible.

Huawen Middle School in Foshan City received a group of students from Britain last week. During their one-week stay in Foshan, the students experienced the campus life of Chinese students. They also visited some places of interest in Foshan and learned about the local culture. The British students were impressed by the kindness of Chinese students, cleanness of the city and delicious food. At the invitation of a British school, 38 students in Huawen Middle School are to set for Britain for an exchange visit next March.

读写任务:

Love and Concern Make Ideal Relationship

Students are becoming unwilling to confess to their teachers because they are not equal in position and teachers lay too much emphasis on the academic performances of the students.

While some students might have doubts, I am willing to share my inner thoughts with my teachers. They show love and concern for their students and are good listeners. I always find it easy to seek support and advice from them, from which I benefit and learn a lot. In this case, an ideal relationship between teachers and students is very important. In my opinion, this relationship should be one filled with love, care and understanding, in which teachers and students show respect for each other and exchange ideas freely. To build a relationship of this kind, teachers should become friends of students while students ought to place more trust in their teachers and give voice to their feelings frankly. Only by joint efforts can we enjoy a warm relationship between teachers and students.
